Georgia is in transition. The well-known Remotely from Georgia programme (USD 2,000/month, 1-year stay for 95 nationalities) is being superseded by the new C5 Long-Stay Visa framework adopted by Parliament on 2026-04-16. The C5 framework reorganises long-stay residence under a unified statutory structure — operational details continued to land through mid-2026. Until the new system fully replaces it, the Remotely-from-Georgia pathway remains accessible for nationals of the eligible 95 countries.
Georgia's standout feature is its Individual Entrepreneur regime under the Small Business Status — a 1% turnover tax on revenues up to GEL 500,000 (~USD 185,000) for registered self-employed individuals. This is one of the lowest effective rates globally for solo professionals. Annual VAT registration threshold is GEL 100,000 (~USD 37,000); below that, no VAT obligation. Family clauses under both Remotely-from-Georgia and C5 are present but unevenly documented — verify with the consulate for your specific case.
Georgia's tax residency triggers at 183 days. The country has no special expat carve-outs — the 1% Small Business Status applies to anyone meeting the criteria, not just foreigners. Standard VAT is 18%. Path to permanent residency: 6 years of continuous residence (with citizenship requiring an additional period under separate criteria).
Three caveats. First, the regulatory shift means any "Georgia visa guide" published before April 2026 is likely stale — including aggregator sites. Verify against geoconsul.gov.ge and parliament.ge directly. Second, the 1% Small Business Status requires actual Georgian business registration (Individual Entrepreneur status), not just visa-holder status — distinct legal step. Third, banking access for non-residents has tightened since 2022 — opening a Georgian bank account now typically requires in-person presence and additional KYC documentation.
